A Strong Foundation
A Brief History of American National Bank
The history of American National Bank stretches over a century. Since the opening of The Dawson Bank in 1887, the State Bank of Elk Creek in 1893 and the Home State Bank and Trust Company in 1915, a history began that would soon migrate to the Omaha area under the name of West Omaha National Bank in 1964.
American National Corporation Formed
In 1968, a new branch facility at 90th & Dodge opened as American National Bank. Several other branches followed and, in 1980, American National Corporation was formed and American National Bank, Omaha, became a wholly owned subsidiary of the Corporation.
In 1986, American National Corporation, then a publicly owned, single bank holding company, became a privately held, "multi-bank" holding company.
In 1989, American National Bank of Sarpy County was established. Several other bank purchases were consummated and the combined assets of American National Bank grew to $400 million. In 1994, American National Corporation now included American National Bank (Omaha) which was formed when American National Bank - Omaha and Northern Bank merged; American National Bank - Nebraska City, Home State Bank; Johnson County Bank; and American National Bank (Sarpy County). In 1996, Fairbury State Bank was purchased and in 1998, all subsidiary banks merged in to the Omaha bank charter with the main office located at 90th and Dodge Streets. Several additional locations were opened, Elkhorn in 1998, Lakeside in 1999, and in 2001, American National Bank opened the first office in Lincoln, NE.
American National Bank and Peoples National Bank Join Forces
In 2001, American National Bank and Peoples National Bank formed one bank with separate identities. Peoples National Bank had been a long-standing financial institution in the western Iowa region with locations in Council Bluffs, Crescent, Missouri Valley and Carter Lake. It began as Peoples State Bank in 1934 and in 1993, it was purchased and the name changed to Peoples National Bank.
Looking to expand the mortgage business, the corporation purchased Residential Mortgage Services in 2005.
